{image 2}Blasbichlers Twentyone, 2011 Work excerpts: Martin Neugebauer, Barbara Springer Interview with Régine Debatty from we-make-money-not-art.com: Régine: If i understood the project well, you ran a seminar at the University of Innsbruck where 21 architecture students, the famous "Blasbichlers Twentyone", were given the assignment to study the plans of the bank, spot their weaknesses and then take advantage of them to make a bank robbery in which however, they could not steal money. Is that so? Could you give us a few more details about the project? Armin: The project is the result of a semester-long design research course at the Institute of Design/Studio1 at the University of Innsbruck. The course was conceived as a laboratory to investigate in the continuing marginalization of the role of the architect, the sheer new mass of young architects produced by Universities trying to find a stand, the potentials of role play and last but not least the bold attempt to run an academic course as a profit oriented business model. For the motivation of a young aspiring architect I would put it a little more dramatic: »...Yo, we gotta take the power back! Bam! Here's the plan!« (Rage Against the Machine, Take the Power Back) Continue reading ... | Book available here

The Game of Fool, 2002 Wood frame, billiard cloth, wadding, rod, springs | L 210cm, W 100cm, H 78cm "The Game of Fool" translates conceptions of borrowing space into a playable and physical experience. The sculpture merges principles of football (large scale) and pool billiard (medium scale) and comes with a specific set of rules. The pitch is pivoting along its center line according to the displacement of the weight of the balls. Thus the pitch is no longer the silent backdrop for play but becomes an active strategic resource.

»Romanticism is not about anarchy, it rather reflects the instance of the conflict between the principles of absolute autonomy of the individual, versus the absolute authority of the universal.«

Timshel I, 2013 - ongoing
Wooden sailboat | L 9.20m, W 2.60m, H 7.10m, 1500kg

A wooden sailboat with shelter for two, trapped in a secluded tiny lake on 2150 metres above sea level, embedded in the midst of the Dolomites, a massif emerged from and shaped by a primeval ocean. Under the leitmotif "Radical Romaticism" twenty five architecture students from Innsbruck University under the guidance of Armin Blasbichler, authored, financed and put into place "Timshel I" - altogether with no prior knowledge in boatbuilding whatsoever.

When in 1902 French sculptor Auguste Rodin urged his friend, the Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke to visit the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, for the young writer the encounter with a caged panther in the zoo there marked the moment of epiphany in his œuvre.

Milliers de barreaux, 2015
Ø12mm reinforcing steel bars, beeswax | L 4.80m (var.), W 3.10m (var.), H 1.60m (var.), 1400kg

Embodied in an elevated, swinging steel-structure which covers the entire floor area of a cramped exhibition space in the French captial, «Milliers de barreaux» triggers a compressed aesthetic of inwardness. Reverberating the steps and strides of the public in its proximity, the paralysis of both spectator, figure and ground dissolve into a seamless corporeal experience.
